Description

Red Sapphire is a rare and highly valued variety of the mineral corundum. In the gemstone world, “red sapphire” is often used as a trade or descriptive term, but scientifically, the red form of corundum is more commonly known as Ruby. The red color comes from traces of chromium within the crystal structure.

• Color: Deep red to purplish red (from light pinkish-red to “pigeon blood” red in top quality stones)
• Hardness: 9 on the Mohs scale (extremely durable, second only to diamond)
• Luster: Vitreous (glass-like brilliance)
